On view NOW: Copying Caravaggio
On view NOW: check out the Copying Caravaggio installation in gallery 217 through 12/10/17.
This installation offers a rare opportunity to compare CMA’s masterwork, Caravaggio’s The Crucifixion of Saint Andrew (part of CMA’s permanent collection) with a copy made by a skilled unknown artist who probably had direct access to the original painting.
For generations, the identity of the copyist has been the subject of intense speculation; some art historians believe it is by Caravaggio himself, although there is no documentation that he copied his own work this precisely.
