Renovation and expansion project generated $593 million over 7 years

CLEVELAND (April 16, 2012) – The Cleveland Museum of Art generates more than $140 million in economic activity within Cuyahoga County annually according to findings by economic and business consulting firm Kleinhenz & Associates. The study released today examined the economic contribution and benefits of the museum's operations, renovation and expansion project, and associated visitor spending. Findings indicate that the museum generates approximately $64 million in direct and indirect spending from its operating expenditures and its visitors generate $80 million in total sales each year. Additionally, through the museum's operating spending and as a result of being a primary visitor destination, over 1,200 jobs in Cuyahoga County are created or sustained.

"The museum plays an important role in the economic vitality of the Northeast Ohio region," said David Franklin, the Sarah S. and Alexander M. Cutler director. "We are pleased not only to offer experiences that enhance residents' quality of life, but also contribute to the local economy through economic stimulus, attracting visitors, and job creation."

The study also examined the economic impact of the museum's renovation and expansion project, the largest capital project undertaken by a cultural institution in the State of Ohio. Between 2005 and 2012, the project generated $593 million dollars in economic activity. This economic stimulus created or sustained an average of 500 jobs per year, despite the recent downturn in the national economy.

"The renovation and expansion project is one of the most comprehensive in the nation. We're looking forward to sharing this significant achievement and stunning architectural design with residents and attracting more visitors to the Cleveland area once it's fully completed in late 2013," said Franklin.

In addition to its economic impact on Cuyahoga County, the Cleveland Museum of Art serves as a leading institution for Northeast Ohio's arts and culture sector. Recently, the museum was re-accredited by the American Association of Museums, placing it in just 4.8% of all museums nationwide to receive this distinction. A self-motivated process, AAM's museum accreditation program is the field's primary vehicle for quality assurance, regulation, and public accountability. It brings national recognition to a museum for its commitment to excellence, high professional standards, and continued institutional improvement.
